I’ve always loved coffee. I remember getting Starbucks with my dad in middle school and loving the taste. Ever since then, I’ve been drinking 1-2 cups each day. Lately, these past 6 months, I’ve been having a really hard time metabolizing caffeine. After a cup of coffee my heart is racing, I feel jittery and I feel too wired to concentrate. I started drinking more and more tea in place of coffee and have gradually become obsessed with tea. I drink two cups of tea every night before bed. (Fun Fact: I have not yet met a cup of tea that I didn’t like.)
On my tea journey, I discovered Matcha and have totally fallen in love. I’ve been sharing my love for Matcha on Instagram and now I’m excited to finally talk more about it on here.
Matcha is a type of Japanese green tea that is packed with antioxidants, vitamins and other beneficial plant compounds like chlorophyll. Chlororphyll is what gives Matcha the deep green color and helps in the detoxification process by preventing the accumulation of harmful toxins within the body.
Matcha is a combination of both caffeine and L-theanine. L-theanine is an amino acid that is commonly found in sleepytime gummies with melatonin. L-theanine produces alpha brain waves which encourage relaxation and induce a feeling of mental clarity. The amount of caffeine in a cup of Matcha is lower than a cup of coffee but greater than a cup of green tea. The cool part about Matcha is that the L-theanine helps to avoid the crash that typically follows caffeine consumption. Personally, Matcha provides the perfect amount of energizing properties for me without any of the adverse effects of caffeine. (Goodbye, shakiness)
I’ve done a lot of research on Matcha and discovered that it provides improved mood, attention and alertness due to the excess of phytochemicals. Many years ago Buddhist monks would drink Matcha before meditation to allow for deeper concentration during meditation sessions. Additional research studies show that Matcha prevents damage to kidneys, decreased risk of liver disease, reduced liver enzyme levels, decreased tumor size in rats and a protection against heart disease.
Overall, I’ve finally discovered a drink that I love (although, many say it tastes too “earthy”) and provides caffeine without any adverse effects.

I LOVE matcha! I really want to find some to make at home, especially in a bulletproof form. I find that it will even wake me up more than a cup of coffee!
