Maternal Mental Health: How to choose the right prenatal supplement

My favorite part of work is helping women (& men) make informed decisions about their health. Choosing the best prenatal supplement for you and your future baby is one of my favorite topics. Supplements can be an important tool in ensuring we have adequate nutritional support however, they are NOT FDA regulated…. meaning that companies can claim that they have a ‘clean’ product without any oversight.

I am partnering with Beli Baby to showcase their prenatal supplement because I have researched so many different brands and have yet to find one as comprehensive as theirs. Their women’s supplement has been shown to:

  • Boost fertility for healthy conception
  • Improve egg quality
  • Protect baby’s brain & spine (through optimal levels of folate and choline)
  • Maintain healthy energy throughout pregnancy & postpartum
  • Support bone density for mama & baby
  • Help reduce nausea
  • Support postpartum recovery and breastfeeding

One of the biggest reasons for noncompliance with supplement routines is the side effects (ie, nausea, or poor metallic taste). During pregnancy, nausea is a common pregnancy symptom and often vitamins can actually increase our susceptibility to nausea. Beli is formulated with high quality iron and TRAACSTM minerals that are easier to absorb and gentler on the stomach to help reduce effects of morning sickness.

Folate, folic acid vs l-methylfolate:

Folate, or vitamin B9, is thought of as one of the 13 essential vitamins. It cannot be synthesized by the body, and must be obtained either from diet or supplementation. Folic acid is a synthetic dietary supplement that is present in artificially enriched foods and pharmaceutical vitamins. Neither folate nor folic acid is metabolically active. Both must be broken down to participate in cellular metabolism. Methyltetrahydrofolate (l-methylfolate) is the predominant micronutrient form of folate that circulates in plasma and that is involved in biologic processes.

Beli uses optimal levels of l-methylfolate, which is superior to folic acid, to aid in healthy fetal development and pairs it with B vitamins to support energy.
