What is collagen? How do you find the best collagen supplement?

The majority of our skin is formed from collagen which is found in the extracellular matrix of the skin. It is the foundation for our skins structure and plasticity. At approximately 25, both the types of collagen in the skin and the amount of collagen begins to decline – leading to dry skin that is prone to wrinkles.

NOT all collagen supplements are created equal and its important to make sure that the supplements you are using are healthy and effective. I was using Vital Proteins for YEARS and did not notice a difference at all. I discovered a new brand and in 30 days I have noticed improved skin texture, less dry patches and a decreased appearance of wrinkles on my neck and hands. (Source)

I want to save y’all time and $$ so here are some tips on how to find the best collagen:

HEAVY METAL TESTING is not the norm and many major brands on the market either do not test at all

MULTIPLE SOURCES is a vital piece that I was missing. I was taking either marine or bovine collagen when in fact the products that have multiple strains of collagen have even more of a synergistic and powerful effect. Fun fact: vegan collagen is NOT collagen and therefore, only contains collagen boosting ingredients. To get collagen you need animal products.

I have been using the Green Compass collagen and it is ELITE. It contains CBG (not CBD) that helps reduce inflammation, fights infections, boosts mood and energizes the body. It has 3x more antioxidants than CoQ10, 15x more antioxidants than green tea and contains 72 trace minerals from seaweed.

The Green Compass Collagen has been shown to:

  • Helps protect connective tissue, supports healthy joints and muscles
  • Improves skin’s moisture and skin elasticity
  • Protects skin from oxidative stress and a full spectrum of radicals
  • Gives skin a natural glow that promotes healthy aging
  • Beauty from within for glowing skin, strong hair and nails

How to use?

Unflavored collagen is my favorite because you can mix it in smoothies, add it to brownies when baking, mix it into your yogurt or add it in your favorite beverage (tea, coffee, hot cocoa). I usually mix mine in my coffee with some almond creamer and cinnamon. YUM.
